Making the Invisible…Visible

Infrared light is a type of light just beyond the visible spectrum, meaning we can’t see it with our eyes. To capture infrared light, you need a camera that can detect it. Or, like I do and have previously spoken and written about, you can use an iPhone, an infrared filter, and a bit of post-processing.

Technical execution aside, I still can’t get over that, with my lowly iPhone (and an IR filter), I can make the invisible…visible. That alone is trippy.

Metaphorically, given my own autobiographical approach to photography, it’s an easy picture of how I take and make photographs. I make the invisible…visible.

When you view my photographs, it doesn’t take much of a stretch to see and feel what I’m feeling—good, bad, and ugly. Through my lens, I’m often showing you all of life’s drivers—motivations, aspirations, successes, triumphs, failures, insecurities, and fears. It’s all right there.

Using infrared photography, I delve into the unseen aspects of our world, much like how I explore the hidden facets of my own life and emotions. The infrared spectrum reveals a world that is always there but often overlooked, much like the emotions and experiences we carry within us.

When I capture an image in infrared, I’m not just taking a photo; I’m unveiling a hidden reality. The trees, the sky, the water—all take on an ethereal quality, transforming the mundane into the extraordinary. This transformation mirrors my journey in photography and life.

I strive to uncover the beauty and truth in everyday moments, to reveal the layers beneath the surface.
In my work, I aim to connect with viewers on a deeper level. I want you to see beyond the obvious, to feel the emotions that I felt when I captured the image. Whether it’s the quiet solitude of a Cape Cod beach at dawn or the vibrant energy of a bustling Provincetown street, my photographs are a window into my soul.

Infrared photography, with its ability to make the invisible visible, is a perfect metaphor for my approach to life and art.

It’s about seeing beyond the surface, finding beauty in the unexpected, and embracing the full spectrum of human experience. Through my lens, I invite you to join me on this journey, to see the world—and yourself—in a new light.
